Season Starts Saturday Sept 7!

Posted by JERRED COOK at Aug 31, 2019 4:45PM PDT ( 1 Comment )

Schedules are posted here:
Opening Day is Saturday Sept 7, now less than a week away! Game schedules are now published here:
So check it out to see when your team(s) play! Kindergarten, 1st, and 2nd graders all play at Edgar School fields. All 3rd graders and up play at Myrtle or Charles fields.

For opening day we expect the teams to spend a little time getting to know each other and to practice for a little while. Games can be played when both teams are ready to go.

Soccer is a super exciting sport and we expect you to cheer on your kids but we also expect that all parents will behave themselves. Parents should STAY OFF THE FIELDS. Please also be POSITIVE with all of your cheering! For games that have referees please understand that the refs are kids too. They will make mistakes so please be supportive of them. Remember that this is really just an organized play date for your kids. It should be FUN.

Chairs are not allowed on the turf fields. Myrtle and Charles are Metuchen Town fields and we need to follow the rules. You are welcome to bring chairs to watch the kids play but they have to be completely off the turf fields. No exceptions! If you bring chairs to Edgar to watch the game we ask that you keep them a safe distance behind the field lines so kids don’t get hurt running into them.

We need your help setting up and tearing down the fields each week. If you have a 9AM game please plan to arrive by 8:30 to help set up. If you are the last game on a field please stick around to help tear down the fields and put everything away.

You’ll get your team jerseys at the first game. Wear shorts and cleats or shoes that the kids can run in. All kids need shin guards to play. Cleats are not required but they can certainly help the kids have better traction. Please also bring your own balls to practices and to games (to warm up with before the game starts). Also bring PLENTY OF WATER! The turf fields get really hot even on cold days and water is a must!

We have a collection of used cleats that we put out before games on the weekends. Please donate your old cleats as you out grow them and feel free to grab a new pair as you need them, We’ll have this set out at Edgar field every Saturday for the first few weeks of the season.

We hate to cancel games and practices. In general unless there is lightning or unsafe conditions we will play. The turf fields (Myrtle and Charles) handle the water very well so we will play there as long as it is safe, even in pouring rain! Edgar does get muddy though and we don’t want to destroy the field so we will cancel there if the rain is strong enough to merit. Cancelations will be sent out via email and posted to our website ( by 8AM for Saturday games and by 5PM for weeknight practices.

Practices start the week of September 9.
Practices are run by the coaches with the help of our trainers. Parents should stay for the entire practice or inform their coaches if someone else is responsible for their kids.
The practice schedule is below. Please make sure your kids are dressed appropriately for the weather and bring plenty of water. They should also wear their shin guards and bring their balls to practice.

It’s all about fun and soccer.

The Metuchen Town Soccer Club organizes a recreational soccer program that
emphasizes equal participation and instruction for all while de-emphasizing winning and
losing, league standings and all-star concepts. Our goal is for children to enjoy playing
soccer while also learning sportsmanship, cooperation and the skills of the game.
The program is open to youths from kindergarten through ninth grade. Any child who
lives or goes to school in Metuchen or whose parents work in Metuchen is eligible to play.

Our fall season consists of 10 games, which are played on Saturdays beginning the first
week of September and ending by the second week of November. Players from first
grade on up also practice once a week. We also offer a spring soccer program that goes
from the first week of April through the end of May.

Since 1991, the Club has upheld a soccer tradition that’s a source of community and
enjoyment for the kids and parents of Metuchen. As a club we are proud of our
contribution to the borough and our influence on its youth. In support of education and
community involvement, we provide scholarships to Metuchen High School seniors each
year through our Tony Black Memorial Fund, named after the founder of our organization.

In addition, the Club also provides new soccer equipment to Metuchen schools as well
as funding for other activities that benefit the children of Metuchen.

The Metuchen Town Soccer Club receives no funding from The Borough of Metuchen or
the Metuchen Travel Soccer Club, and is a not-for-profit organization under section
501(c)3 of the Internal Revenue Code.

Contributions (but not registration or late fees) are tax deductible. Information filed with
the Attorney General concerning The Metuchen Town Soccer Club may be obtained
from the Attorney General of the State of New Jersey by calling (973) 504-6215 or by

imply endorsement. Federal ID#22-3092312. NJ Charities Reg. #CH1270200.

Volunteers Needed - No Soccer Skills required

Our organization depends on volunteers! As our club continues to grow (we currently have almost 500 kids playing per fall season), we have seen a marked decrease in the number of volunteers across all our programs. Preparing, organizing, and maintaining a program of our size requires volunteers on the field, at the monthly meetings and behind computers to help make it run smoothly. Your small time commitment can make a huge difference.  We need you during the season and in the off-season. See below for the many ways to get involved.

  1. Coach/Manager Soccer skills are not required.  We will train you.  The coach organizes and runs practices and games.
  2. Assistant Coach Soccer skills are not required.  We will train you.  The assistant coach supports the coach and assumes the role of the coach if the coach is absent.
  3. Team Parent - Team Parents help with team correspondence and organizing the year end party.
  4. Field Setup & Maintenance - This group of individuals is responsible for field maintenance projects such as assembling the soccer goals at the beginning of the season; moving soccer goals into position Saturday mornings before the first game and/or moving the goals off the field after the last game;  marking lines on the fields;  disassembling the goals at the season?s end; and moving goals into winter storage.
  5. Field Assignment - Help us create the field assignments for the season and for the year-end megatastical event.
  6. Light Administrative Work - Help us manage our correspondence or the registration database.  Maybe make a few phone calls to parents and/or coaches.
  7. Special Projects/Events These range in size and scope.  We need help at our booth on occasions like our busy first and last days of the season.
  8. Referee Management Team These individuals would manage the youth referee scheduling and payments.  Referees serve the 2nd through 8th grade divisions.
  9. Sponsor Management - This person would manage the sponsors.  They would make decisions regarding how we would showcase sponsors, coordinate all sponsorship activities, and manager sponsor payments in coordination with the treasurer.
  10. Website Management Assistance - This person would  work with the website manager to keep the website up to date.

Frequently Asked Questions

What ages do you have programs for?  The regular program is open to youths from kindergarten through ninth grade.  We also offer a special pre-k "mini-meggers" program for our youngest kids.

Who is eligible to play? Any child who lives or goes to school in Metuchen or whose parents work in Metuchen is eligible to play.

What does it cost to participate? The fee to participate in the fall program is $90 per player. We realize that financial circumstances sometimes make this a challenge for families. If this is the case, please email us at regarding scholarships.

What equipment does my child need to play? Here’s a list of the required and optional things they’ll need to play: 1) Shin guards - for all games and practices.2) A soccer Ball: size 3 for Grades K-2, size 4 for Grades 3-5, size 5 for Grades 6-8. 3) Water - We can’t stress this enough. Please bring your own water to games and practices. 4) Soccer shoes are highly recommended for all ages, but not required. Please note that, due to safety concerns, baseball/softball/American football cleats must be approved for club play. No metal cleats of any kind are allowed.

How do you organize the teams? For the 1st through 8th grade divisions, coaches are invited to participate in the team creation process. The process of making up teams is complex. The committee assigned to this task tries to achieve parity by balancing the teams according to skill level. In the older grade divisions, an age balance must also be struck. To further complicate things, we have to make sure there's a child of a coach and 2 assistant coaches on each team. Coaches always coach their child’s team and siblings in the same division are placed together. We strive to ensure that a player has one or more teammates from his/her school (Campbell, St. Francis, etc.). We also work to achieve gender balance in the mixed boys/girls divisions. Despite our best efforts, the balance isn't always achieved, but it is our goal. Because of the intricacies of team creation, requests for specific coaches and/or teammates, other than parent/child or sibling pairings, are not honored by the Club. Since it would be nearly impossible to honor all requests, it is in everyone’s best interests to honor none.

Do you have a lost & found? If you or your child left something behind after a game or practice, please look for it in the field box. If it’s not there, please send an email to All clothing items that are unclaimed at the end of the Fall season are donated to Metuchen D.A.R.E.

When do you cancel games and practices due to rain? For game days, always check the Club website for game changes or cancellations due to weather and playability of the field. The Club will inspect the fields early each Saturday during the season for playability. The status of the fields for that day will be posted on the website by 8:30 AM as 'Open' or 'Closed'.See our Rainout Policy page for all the details. For practice sessions, the decision whether or not to cancel practice is at the discretion of the team coaches. See our Rainout Policy page for full details.

When does the Club's leadership meet? MTSC meetings are normally scheduled for the second Wednesday of each month at 8:00 (or 8:30) PM at the Metuchen Borough Hall (Main Street and Route 27), on the 2nd floor. All parents and guardians of players are invited - and encouraged - to attend. Check our events listings on our home page for dates and time changes. If you have questions, please email us at
